The Macan stepped into its second generation with a completely new approach to the market by ditching internal combustion engines under its hood in favor of an all-electric setup.
Porsche introduced the so-called Baby Cayenne in 2014 as a worthy alternative for those looking for a compact-sized premium crossover. Besides its performance and brand, the Macan had a few punchy engines that could keep up, and even overtake, some sports cars. After the world started to look more closely at electric vehicles, the German brand focused on developing EVs and launched the Taycan. Then, in 2014, a decade after the Macan’s introduction, it unveiled the second generation of this moniker with an all-electric powertrain and built the crossover on a new platform called Premium Platform Electric, or PPE.
Starting at the front, the 2024 Macan carried over some design ideas from its sibling, the Taycan. It featured geometric-shaped headlights with four horizontal LED bars inside for the daytime running lights. A Matrix LED system with adaptive lighting was available. The low stance of the hood and the broad grille in the lower part of the bumper made the car look aggressive and fast. Furthermore, Porsche installed an adaptive lower air intake that could open and close to improve cooling or aerodynamics, respectively.
From its profile, the 2024 Macan kept a similar shape to its predecessor, with a crossover stance, a higher ground clearance than a regular sedan, and a short hood. The raked windshield was followed by an arched line that described the roof and the tilted forward tailgate at the back. All these combined helped the car achieve a 0.25 drag coefficient. Porsche offered the Macan with up to 22-inch alloy wheels. Under the rear bumper, the automaker installed a black diffuser and, as expected, no tailpipes.
Inside, Porsche created an elegant yet sporty ambiance. The automaker created a spacious cabin thanks to the Macan’s 2.9-meter (113.9-inch) wheelbase, which is 86 mm (3.5-inch) more than its predecessor. The PPE architecture allowed it to lower the front and the rear seats. The driver fronted a fully digital 12.6” curved display for the instrument cluster. At the same time, a 10.9-inch touchscreen sat atop the center stack in a free-floating position. Furthermore, customers could have the 2024 Macan with an augmented reality head-up display that projected images onto the windshield. Surprisingly, even though Porsche was not so keen to implement Android Auto in its models, the second generation of its compact-sized crossover relied on Android Automotive OS.
Customers were greeted by bolstered front seats separated by a tall center console that housed a touchscreen for the HVAC control unit, two cup holders, and an armrest. At the same time, in the back, the automaker installed a split-folding bench seat that could expand the trunk space. Customers could use either the rear luggage compartment or the frunk for storage.
The Macan 4 was the base model for the second generation of this nameplate and was powered by two electric motors, one for each axle. Besides all-wheel drive, it was all-wheel steering as well, thus helping its customers make tighter turns while parking.
