One of my favorite feelings is going out for a drive with my rotorhead buddies. Pulling up to an event together is always fun, but some drawbacks exist. Most kids today don't even know what an FC is, and they'll often ignore it to gawk at the FD.
I don't mind; I haven't bought the car for social acceptance. I bought it because I love driving it, looking at it, and hearing it (also because I couldn't afford the FD). But I imagine that's what 924/944/928 owners must feel when driving up to a Porsche meeting with all the 911s lined up. Living in the shadow of your big brother can be tough for some people, but you can always fix that if you want to.

While I considered buying an FC RX-7 as not being very different from owning an FD, I can't say the same thing about the Porsche situation. If I were to buy another car for my garage, I would go straight for the 911 and wouldn't even consider buying something else. You don't need to tell me how good Caymans are: I've driven one and know I can't afford a GT4 RS.

A Boxster would be fun to have, and I guess my wife would love it. But I would rather buy a base-model 911 than own a 944 Turbo. I want the full Porsche experience: a rear-mounted, boxer flat-six engine and iconic shape. With Hot Wheels cars, getting all of them is easier as the entry cost is much lower.

I'm happy with my black 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo but more enthusiastic about the 1971 911. Last year, Mattel introduced the 928S Safari in Metaflake Gray with black wheels. I've seen it warming the pegs many times, and I could never find the interest to pick it up. Now, the diecast company is trying to lure us in with an Elite 64 take on the car.

The Porsche 928 Safari casting is Dmitriy Shakhmatov's work and is more detailed than its Mainline "sibling." It has a metal base and Custom Real Riders wheels. Thank God the spare wheel is the same quality as the other four. The rally lights are cool, and the concept is interesting, but the execution? The color scheme on the Mobil 1 Porsche Dirtmeister 944 was pretty good.

But I can't understand the orange-on-orange look of the 928 Safari. To make things even worse, some of the presentation photos include the Pandem Datsun 280ZX. At least, in my eyes, that's a much nicer collectible. The new Elite 64 vehicle doesn't feature any moving parts, so that's that. I might be missing the point with this item, and some of you will like it regardless. It goes live on April 25, 2024, at 9 AM PT and will cost $20. I will be happier with the 911 Carrera RS 3.8 from the Fast & Furious set.
