Slowly, India is becoming the new promised land for carmakers. As the Chinese auto market is already under siege because of its insatiable appetite for new cars, companies are at the same time repositioning themselves so that when India really opens up, they’d be better prepared to strike gold right from the start.
The Volkswagen Group is one of the them. The German-led conglomerate has deputized its Czech subsidiary Skoda to take care of business there, and Skoda is wasting no time.

During the Auto Expo 2020 in New Delhi next month, Skoda will be presenting a car it has specifically created for the local market. For now only a concept called IN, the SUV will hit production lines later this year.

The carmaker has already previewed the IN in December 2019, when it showed a sketch of the interior. Now, the first images showing the front and rear ends of the car have surfaced.

As presented in these sketches, the IN looks aggressive enough at the front to impress show goers in Delhi, but is a tad less so at the rear. Overall the SUV, which will enter the compact segment, looks pretty much like most other Skodas presently on the market. What will set it apart though is what sits beneath the body.

The car is based on a derivative of the MQB platform called A0 IN, created specifically “with a focus on India and Indian customers.”

The production version of this concept will be the first one to use it, but other cars of the VW group will be based on it in the future as well.

As for what engines will be used on the IN, Skoda is tight lipped for now. Even so, we don’t expect major innovations in this respect, but rather a lot of adaptations of existing technologies.
