The tiny living movement might still be in its infancy in Canada, but interest in tiny homes is increasing considerably in this part of the world. As such, more and more builders are entering the market to meet the increasing demand and are trying to attract customers with their mindful designs.
Artelle Tiny Homes, located on Galiano Island between Vancouver Island and British Columbia's mainland, is one of the new players in the industry. They create handcrafted eco-friendly houses that offer both comfort and functionality and are individually tailored to meet the clients' specific needs and desires. The Salal 20 model is one of the first tiny homes designed and built by the company and comes with a sturdy construction, a modern exterior, and a cozy and inviting interior fit for up to three people.

For the talented team at Artelle Tiny Homes, small living is about doing more with less, and by offering people a reliable permanent residence, they also aim to help them their ecological footprint and achieve financial freedom and a life defined by flexibility, freedom, and adventure.

While many tiny homes crafted by European or American builders aren't built to be four-season livable, Canadian manufacturers are aware of the specifics of the local climate, so they focus on building tiny dwellings that enable customers to not only survive but thrive during the harsh Canadian winters. This is also the case with Salal, which is a structurally rigid, completely waterproof, and tightly insulated home on wheels.

This tiny home is built on a double-axle, Transport Canada Certified trailer and measures 20 feet (6 meters) in length and 8.5 feet (2.6 meters) in width. It really stays true to the principles of tiny living, offering just 246 square feet (22.8 square meters) of interior space, but it manages to squeeze in a kitchen, a living area, a sleeping loft, and a bathroom.

Basically, it does have everything one needs to live comfortably while also offering the perk of mobility. As for people living in Canada, a home that is also easier to heat in the winter and cool in the summer is also an appealing prospect, as it is more affordable and better for the environment.

The home's exterior is clad in western red cedar siding and trims, painted all black, coupled with standing seam metal roofing. As for the interior, it features a combination of solid pine siding and birch plywood for the walls and ceiling, coupled with laminate floorings. Artelle says it uses sustainable, locally sourced wood for all of their compact dwellings.

A fiberglass front door leads inside the compact living area, which has enough space for a three-seater couch. For a 20-foot home, you would expect the interior to feel overly cramped or confined, but this is not the case. The designers went for an open-space ground floor, with a seamless transition between the living room and the kitchen area, which makes the interior feel more spacious.

The use of white paneling on the walls and windows throughout also adds to the openness of the space. Besides the glass door, the living area also has a large picture window framed with western red cedar, which brings in plenty of natural light. The kitchen and sleeping loft also benefit from extensive glazing that helps with ventilation and brightness.

The kitchen is equipped with soft-close drawers and cupboards and modern appliances that make it perfect for cooking your favorite meals, including a stainless steel sink bowl, a two-burner induction cooktop, a low-profile microwave hood, and a fridge/freezer. Clients can choose between wood or laminate countertops, but regardless of what they choose, there is enough space for meal prep.

Using multifunctional furniture to increase a compact space's practicality is a common practice in tiny home design. Artelle also used this trick inside Artelle, with a good portion of the kitchen countertop also doubling as a breakfast bar and offering inhabitants a place to serve their meals.

The spacious sleeping loft is accessible through a custom storage-integrated staircase and looks snug and cozy. It fits a queen-size bed and an ingenious storage solution for pillows and blankets right beneath the operable windows.

Finally, considerable attention has been paid to the bathroom inside Salal, which runs the entire width of the house and is fully functional. It includes modern fixtures such as a luxury stand-up shower with rainfall head and tiled walls, a small vanity with curly maple live edge counter, a sink, and a toilet (clients can choose between composting, incinerating, or flush toilet).

Compact, stylish, and practical, the Salal is a great small dwelling for travel-loving couples who are on the lookout for a reliable tiny home on wheels that can be easily moved around. Artelle Tiny Homes also offers a Salal 20 Airbnb Edition, which forgoes the living room and the loft and puts the master bedroom on the main floor. Additionally, it has a separate breakfast bar and a more spacious kitchen.

As for pricing, the standard Salal 20 tiny home starts at CAD $104,900, which is about US $77,200 at current exchange rates.
