Earlier this week, an RV became airborne after going off a ramp at the ferry terminal at Saguenay River in Quebec, Canada, and crashing down on a ferry that was just pulling out.
The driver of the RV, who has died in the crash, has been identified as Eric Belec. Eyewitnesses on the ferry say that he was a “hero” for the way he tried to warn pedestrians and drivers to get out of the way: the RV was coming down a very steep hill and he couldn’t brake.

There was a female passenger in the RV and she remains in critical condition. No one on the ferry was injured, by mere chance. Video of the crash is also available at the bottom of the page, confirming that it was luck that made it so that no one else was harmed.

Prior to becoming airborne with the RV, Belec was coming down the hill fast, eyewitnesses tell CBC.ca. He was honking his horn to warn everyone, so he must have been experiencing some kind of mechanical issues with the vehicle.

The only reason he went off the ramp may be that he was trying to crash into something to get the RV to stop. “He was trying to stop by swerving into the metal gates on the side of the road,” Chloe Duplessis, who was on the ferry at the time of the crash, says for local media.

“There was a lot of panic – a lot of people almost got hit,” Claire Gagne says, calling Belec a hero. Other witnesses also say that there were “many close calls.”

Following the incident, the mayor of Tadoussac, Charles Breton, says that local authorities must reconfigure the steep hill so nothing like this ever happens again. Children and tourists often hang out at the pier at the exact place where the RV went flying, and there is heavy bus and truck traffic, which is a certain recipe for disaster.
