It's been a while since FSD Beta builds have made the news, as Tesla slowed down the V11 development. Even though the 12th iteration is just around the corner, according to Elon Musk, the EV startup is preparing a major update for the current branch.
This year, Tesla worked long hours to advance its self-driving software. The FSD Beta development accelerated after the software was recalled in response to the NHTSA's criticism. During all this time, Tesla stopped offering updates to its customers and focused on solving the problems raised by the agency. After the recall was issued, Tesla spoiled us with weekly updates, bringing new features and improving FSD Beta behavior.

Besides Tesla offering timely updates, Elon Musk was also very active on his social media platform X, answering fans' questions and providing updates. This showed that he was genuinely excited about the self-driving software's progress. Musk spoke several times about the imminent V12 launch, Tesla's first end-to-end AI self-driving software. The expectations were high, as V12 should mark the moment Tesla Full Self-Driving becomes production-ready, abandoning the beta status.

Still, before summer, Musk almost forgot about FSD Beta and turned his attention to other matters. Without a PR or press department, Tesla turned off the lights on journalists reporting on FSD Beta development. This explains the lack of FSD news in the past months, although Musk broke the news blackout in August to live-stream a driving session with the FSD V12. The latest iteration of the autonomous driving software failed to impress, showing that it's still far from becoming production-ready.

In the meantime, new builds of the FSD Beta V11 were launched, with the latest, V11.4.7.3, sent to vehicles in the most advanced group of beta testers in October. Other Tesla customers in North America are still rocking FSD V11.4.4, however, on the latest 2023.38.8 software version. Rumor has it that a new version of the FSD Beta V11 is almost finished and will be offered to all vehicles on 2023.38 software.

Release notes leaked on Reddit reveal that FSD Beta V11.4.8 is tested by Tesla employees and Group 1 beta testers. This update is much more important than a point release might suggest, as it introduces a new video module that allows for increased performance and lower latency than before. According to the release notes, the video module "caches intermediate computations to dramatically reduce the amount of computing that happens at any particular time."

This allows FSD Beta V11.4.8 to process more data more efficiently, improving control precision and object detection while reducing errors. A critical improvement emphasized in the release notes is that this FSD Beta version can access ten times more HW4 data, tripling resolution and increasing the overall stability of measurements. This helps improve Vision Park Assist prediction accuracy by 16% for all vehicles.
