The S650 seventh-generation 2024 Ford Mustang easily beat the discontinued sixth-generation Camaro and L-bodied third-generation Dodge Challenger in terms of sales during the first quarter of the year, of course.
However, that doesn't mean the Blue Oval company doesn't have reasons to look back with love to the times that have passed – specifically when the Camaro ZL1 and the countless SRT variants were opposed by 'monsters' like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.
No worries, earlier this month, the world of spy photographers pointed in the direction of a mysterious S650 Ford Mustang prototype, wondering if that's a new Shelby of some sort. Chances are big that we will need to wait a little longer for Shelbys because the Blue Oval is first prepared to celebrate 60 years of Mustangs, and most likely, the camouflage was on top of the 60th-anniversary version.
As such, maybe it's best to direct your attention to the S550 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 for a little while longer. Especially if it's a context related to the local quarter-mile dragstrip facility, right? Well, the videographer behind the Wheels channel on YouTube is a big fan of The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and he witnessed something truly special there – again.
In fact, it's an entire compilation of special things – including the encounter between a purple Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 and the green Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 that we talked about not long ago courtesy of this videographer's other channel (called Wheels Plus). Anyway, now there are almost six minutes of muscle car footage, and you can easily take your pick of the action – Shelby vs. Mopar, Mopar on Mopar, Mustang vs. muscle wagon, Demon vs. Demon, and even Ford versus Ford!
However, we couldn't help but select a new favorite out of the bunch. So, if it is not too much quarter-mile dragstrip trouble, please direct your attention to the 2:55 mark when the feisty green and black-striped S550 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 faces off with a gray and black 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock from the Last Call special series.
Mostly ignored and misunderstood, this ultra-rare version is said to have many talents out of the dragstrip. Still, we don't really care about those right now – even if the brutal acceleration goes hand in hand with the massive cornering bite and braking grip. At the same time, the halo muscle car is also surprisingly compliant in all sorts of situations.
Before the Demon 170, this was the ultimate Mopar – their quickest and most powerful muscle car on sale, and most reviewers pitted it against the Shelby GT500 both on and off the racetrack because of their close official quarter-mile times and surprising ride and handling capabilities. As such, all bets are off when the GT500 and Super Stock meet in Las Vegas – the victor is easily anyone's guess. Alas, something was amiss with one of these two – and the winner got an 8.93s pass against the loser's 11.15s ET. Now, let's check out who's who, shall we?
