Ford arrived at the 2021 SEMA Show with a big ace up its sleeve in the form of a factory-backed concept vehicle slated to enter production as a limited-edition race truck. It was called the Bronco DR (Desert Runner), and it’s animated by a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 with over 400 horsepower on tap.
The Blue Oval said that it would only build 50 units, each originally priced at over $200,000. That’s quite steep for a vehicle that isn’t allowed on public roads – which is fair, seeing as how it’s got no doors and no windshield.

These trucks, or SUVs, whatever you want to call them, are built by Ford Performance together with Multimatic Motorsports, using a modified Bronco U725 chassis with fiberglass body panels as a foundation.

They look amazing, right? Well, hold on to your hat, because we just found this awesome Desert Runner getting auctioned off to the highest bidder, and it’s going to cost you Italian exotic supercar money in order to land this thing in your garage.

The first thing you’ll notice, apart from the badass design, is the Mystichrome exterior, giving off that Hot Wheels color-changing toy car effect. It looks unbelievably cool, almost to the point where you might feel bad getting this thing dirty on a muddy trail somewhere far away from any public roads.

Anyway, further visual highlights include the roll cage, tubular steel bumpers, side steps, rooftop air scoops, removable engine cover, LED light bars, Rigid Industries rock lights (the latter two as part of the Baja package), plus a set of black-finished 17-inch wheels with massive 37x12.50” BFGoodrich competition-use tires. There’s also a spare wheel mounted above the rear bumper. Hopefully, you’ll never need to use it.

Further mechanical upgrades include the custom calipers over vented discs at all corners, aluminum lower control arms, remote-reservoir adjustable spool valve dampers, plus pressure sensors for the front and rear hydraulic bump stops. Altogether, this Bronco is flexing 11.8 inches of ground clearance, which should get you over pretty much any obstacle as long as you use common sense.

Moving on to the interior, that’s where you’ll find the race-prepped cockpit with Recaro Pro Racer black vinyl seats, a reverse-view camera, driver ventilation, custom window nets, a PCI intercom system, power cutoff switch, sat-nav, and a Ford Performance Sparco flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, mounted on a quick-release hub. These are just a few of the many modifications available on the Bronco DR.

It’s also worth noting that since this truck doesn’t come with an odometer, total mileage is unknown – although I doubt it’s been driven a whole lot.

As for that previously mentioned Coyote V8 engine, it’s a third-gen unit that’s been fitted with a rear-mounted radiator, electric cooling fans, custom headers and mufflers. The 400+ horses are channeled to all four wheels via a 10R80 ten-speed automatic gearbox with an electronically shifted dual-range transfer case and locking differentials.
