Renault has unexpectedly taken the wraps off the fastest road going car they have ever produced. The limited edition Megane RS 265 Trophy was shown today for the first time, ahead of its big debut at the Nurburgring circuit next weekend.

So what have the motorsports experts at Renaultsport managed to achieve? For starters, the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine now produces 15 hp more than current Megane Renaultsport 250, plus 20 Nm extra torque at 360Nm, which translates into a power-to-weight ratio of 191 hp per ton. That puts the hot Megane on par with the Golf and Scirocco R when it comes to pure power.

The hotter than ever hothatch gets to 62 mph (100 km/h) in six seconds exactly (instead of 6.1), while the top speed is now 158 mph (254 km/h), up by an extra 2 mph (3.2 km/h), so it’s a bit faster than those electronically limited German performance saloons if you find a long enough stretch of road.

The 265 Trophy is based on the Cup model, and comes with extra standard equipment like Recaro seats with yellow seatbelts and detailing, 19" Speedline alloys in gloss black with red rim, standard Liquid Yellow i.d. metallic paint, 'Trophy' red decals on F1-style front blade and doors, LED daytime running lights and Renaultsport Monitor on-board performance tracking. High-performance Formula 1-inspired Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires have been fitted, giving owners greater traction in both dry and wet conditions.

Only 500 will ever be made, so you’d better grab one while you can. Of that total figure, 50 are coming to the UK market, priced £27,820 on-the-road, with orders starting on June 20th and first deliveries in late July 2011.
