That Donald Trump, the former reality star / real estate magnate turned President of the United States, more or less directly supports Nazi / white power groups is no secret. But it doesn’t mean that this doesn’t cause controversy whenever it happens.
Over the weekend, Trump met with the Bikers for Trump New Jersey group, and the event is being covered widely in the U.S. media. However, it’s on social media were it’s causing a storm. A new controversy erupted after Trump’s sudden decision to join the bikers in their Allegiance Pledge and after eagle-eyed reporters noticed the patches the bikers were wearing.
During the event, Trump happily posed for photos and selfies, signed autographs and profusely thanked the bikers for coming. When the rain became heavier, he invited them into the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster and made sure they knew they were receiving a special treat.
He also thanked the group for their support and, as per usual, made sure to mock the media in their presence. As the event draw to an end, he posed some more, thanked some more and joined the bikers in their Pledge of Allegiance.
This offered members of the media, who had been kept at a considerable distance from the President at all times, the perfect occasion for pictures, the Washington Post notes. It also allowed them the chance to see the patches on the bikers, many of them sexist or otherwise offensive.
“I (heart) Guns & Titties,” one of the patches on the bikers closest to Trump reads, as per the publication. “The patch features a drawing of a woman’s naked torso and breasts and a pair of handguns atop her nipples,” the Post adds.
Other patches had similarly aggressive messages: “This is America. We eat meat, we drink beer and we speak f**king English” and “Terrorist Hunting Permit.”
“Usually, staff members carefully vet people and settings where a president may be photographed to prevent any embarrassments,” the Post adds. “Although the bikers went through a Secret Service screening ahead of the meeting at Trump’s Bedminster, N.J., resort, it is not clear whether White House staff examined any of the attire.”
But even if they did, they would have probably not vetoed it. After all, these messages are in line with Trump’s MAGA campaign, even if worded differently.
