Opel Astra ecoFLEX Now Available With Start/Stop

Opel’s 5-door hatchback Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX now has better fuel efficiency, thanks to the introduction of an optional Start/Stop system. The new technology, which combines with a number of mechanical and aerodynamic improvements, allows the car’s official combined fuel consumption to drop from 4.1 liters to 3.9 liters per 100 km (from 57.3 to 60.3 mpg US). CO2 emissions have also been lowered from 109 to just 104 g/km, so customers can profit from additional tax benefits in many European countries.

The Astra ecoFLEX comes with a multivalve 70 kW/95 hp 1.3 CDTI turbo diesel engine, which is tuned for economy. Its 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) of torque are available between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm, which is useful for congested city traffic. The engine makes use of a common rail, multiple fuel injection system working at a pressure of 1,600 bar and a turbo charger with variable geometry. Emissions are also reduced thanks to a new E59 control unit, an improved exhaust gas recirculation module (EGR) that is water-cooled to help reducing emissions and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which is fitted as standard.

The new Astra 1.3 ecoFLEX with Start/Stop starts at €19,780 ($25,801) in Germany. While the ecoFLEX version is available with and without Start/Stop system, this comes fitted as standard equipment on the new Sports Tourer, rated at a fuel consumption of 4.1 l/100km (57.3 mpg US) and emissions of 109 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Aerodynamic improvements include an active aero shutter fitted to the front grille that opens to allow air to pass the engine at low vehicle speeds and then closes at higher speeds to reduce drag at the front of the car.
