Over 830,000 attempted to gain entry into the last 16 for the 2012 edition of the Nissan GT Academy online competition. The participants were required to download the competition demo, based on Sony’s excellent driving simulator for the PS3, Gran Turismo 5, and complete a series of challenges culminating in a one-lap timed event, using a Nissan 370Z on a virtual representation of the Motegi circuit.
The 830,000 people who ‘enlisted’ were fighting for a chance to make it to the last 16, which would be joined by another “ 16 Live Event Wild Card winners to take part in a National Final event at Silverstone Circuit (17 and 18 July), where they will face a combination of GT5 gaming challenges and real driving tests using the muscular Nissan 370Zs.”

Of these final 32, only 6 will be selected to go on to the International GT Academy Race Camp, for a week-long event where they will “be put through a series of gruelling driving, physical and mental challenges designed to measure what it takes to become a modern day professional racing driver. The leading UK and Ireland competitor will then battle it out against other European finalists to determine who will be crowned the 2012 GT Academy European Champion.”

The winner of the competition will go on to take part in the “Driver Development Programme”, where the driver will undergo training to reach the necessary skill level to compete in the Dubai 24 Hour race, set to take place in January 2013. The car which will be driven is, of course, a 370Z GT4 (a full race-spec car).
