The gap between racing video games and real-life motorsport has never been smaller, thanks to Nissan’s GT Academy, a competition that allowed Gran Turismo 5 gamers to become professional racers.
Long story short, the competition to turn a computer race driver into a real one debuted in Europe in 2009. Subsequently, after 54,000 people took a shot at it and went though multiple virtual competitional stages, a winner was crowned after actual racing, which tool place at the UK’s Silverstone racetrack.
Now, the whole experience is being brought into the US, with Nissan using a reality TV flavor for this.
You’ll be able to see the challenge that took one gamer from a his chair to a bucket seat in a five-episode program. Dubbed GT Academy USA, this is scheduled to debut on September 20 at 10 pm EST on the Speed Channel.
