If you think about the transition to greener vehicles and the toll this takes on us gear heads, you should consider that carmakers playing in the go-fast field aren't having it easy, either. Let's take Porsche and its 718 mid-engined sportscars for instance.
The downsizing process that saw Zuffenahusen introducing turbo-four boxer mills for the majority of the 718 Boxster and Cayman range is believed to be the cause for sales falling below expectations.
Of course, Porsche keeps the naturally aspirated flat-six alive thanks to the 718 GT4 and Spyder, while the rumors about another pair of six-cylinder models slotted beneath the GT models are still going strong.
In fact, the said models, which have been spied testing on multiple occasions, might be a part of the offensive that's rumored to keep the current 718s around until 2023.
At the same time, it seems that the next generation of mid-engined Porsche sportscars will go full electric. And this is where the situation starts looking similar to that of the Macan.
Since the Germans aren't sure how their customers feel about all-electric cars, both the 718 and the Macan might receive multiple updates for the coming years. As such, the final part of their life cycles will potentially overlap with the all-electric next-gen models.
And, until we get more clues on the matter, let's take some time to enjoy the renderings that brought us here.

"So, why are those tailpipes still there?" I hear you asking. Well, you should know there's a reasonable explanation for it all: the Taycan prototype came with fake exhaust tips right until the end (just kidding, as these renderings were actually completed before the Internet started boiling over the news of full electrification for the sportscars).
