Tesla sold over two million Model 3s during the six years the unit was on sale. That number might keep growing because the vehicle is yet to be available in North America and the UK. People might still order the non-facelifted all-electric sedan. But if you plan on upgrading your current car to a refreshed Model 3 as soon as it becomes available, here's one change that might take some getting used to (besides the absent indicator stalks) – the backup gear shifter is on the ceiling!
Tesla handpicked the media representatives who were allowed to see the facelifted Model 3 for the first time. They most likely had to stick to a script and follow some guidelines with limited time on their hands. That might be why most popular reviewers omitted to look and give the panel where the hazard warning lights button is placed a good feel.

But photos published recently on the automaker's Instagram account show something etched or engraved between the dome lights. The markings can barely be seen, but they are most definitely there. And they look like four letters - P, R, N, D. It can't be anything else than a drive mode fail-safe.

Initially, we didn't believe that Tesla decided to ditch the touch-sensitive drive mode strip found on vehicles like the Model S and Model X. That's because, for a brief period, impatient fans of the brand saw the first refreshed Model 3 images that popped online and discovered the EV would feature a bumper camera. That got us excited because it would have been a great addition, considering the removal of the ultrasonic sensors that are useful for parking in tight or uncommon places. Sadly, Tesla later updated the main photo and the rendered videos, and the camera was gone.

But, lo and behold, it happened. The backup PRND buttons are on a separate panel on the new Model 3's ceiling, nudged right between the sun visors. And it's great that they are present there. If the screen ever freezes and cannot be reset, those extra controls might come in handy. But they're nearly invisible from multiple angles!

The new Model 3 was also brought to IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, Germany, where the public could see it live and get inside it. Those who filmed the EV could also not discover that the drive mode strip had been moved to the ceiling. It's so subtle that one must know it is there in advance.

Fortunately, fellow German journalists from auto motor und sport confirmed what we've seen is right. There are three ways to get the new Model 3 going. The driver can press the gas pedal when the screen indicates so (a function known as Autostart) because the car can recognize when you want to go forward or backward. There are also controls available on the same center display to override the automatic detection of the drive mode. Ultimately, the person behind the steering wheel can press the touch-sensitive buttons now located on the ceiling of the EV.

Tesla hasn't updated the Model 3 for the American market yet. The Brits share the same fate, despite pictures of right-hand drive model emerging online. However, it's unlikely that the automaker will make a last-minute change and move the PRND to the center console, right below the wireless phone charger, like it is currently on the Model S and Model X. However, Tesla is full of surprises, and Elon Musk is one unpredictable CEO. Who knows what might happen!
