Nissan knows how to keep high interest in the Leaf. After all, the electric hatchback has sold over 646,000 units worldwide since its unveiling early last decade and has numerous awards under its belt. For the 2023 model year, the car manufacturer has expanded the family in the United Kingdom with a new member called the Shiro.
Based on the N-Connecta trim level, its name means white in Japanese. Therefore, it is offered in Arctic White as standard or a two-tone finish mixing Storm White and Pearl Black roof as an option. It is also available with the Spare Wheel Pack, the company reveals, and boasts the ProPilot Assist, comprising the Intelligent Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Jam Pilot.

Even though it builds on the N-Connecta, the new Nissan Leaf Shiro is actually more affordable; like £2,000 (equal to $2,544) more affordable. It has a recommended retail price of £28,495 ($36,251) and is on sale now at dealers across the UK. Nissan says it features faux leather upholstery with cloth inserts and gets a complimentary Zapmap Premium subscription for three years with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

The powertrain is identical to that of the N-Connecta. Nissan's Leaf Shiro uses an electric motor that generates 150 ps (148 hp/110 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, driving the front wheels. The Leaf Shiro won't break any speed records, but it can deal with the zero to 100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration in a very respectable 7.9 seconds. The top speed is capped at 145 kph (90 mph), the official spec sheet shows. It has a curb weight of 1,580-1,640 kg (3,483-3,616 lbs), a maximum payload of 450 kg (992 lbs), and a total trunk capacity of 1,103 liters (39 cu-ft) with the rear seats folded down.

With the 39 kWh battery pack fully charged, the combined driving range stands at 270 km (168 miles) on the WLTP cycle and up to 390 km (242 miles) in the city. It features a 6.6 kW on-board charger and a 50 kW rapid charger. The battery sips electrons from alert to 100% in seven and a half hours at a wall box and takes roughly one hour from 20 to 80% at a 50 kW connection.

The N-Connecta version of the Leaf rides on 17-inch black alloys, has black woven fabric upholstery, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, digital radio, Bluetooth, and voice control, six-speaker audio system, 7-inch TFT display, heated steering wheel, automatic climate control, and heated front and rear seats. The Blind Spot Intervention, Rear-Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Hill Start Assist, Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, rearview camera, Intelligent Around View Monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and other safety gear comes standard.
