In ore of our previous reports, we talked about the next generation Audi A4 sedan, which is expected for 2014. This will use new architecture and will be lighter, more efficient and refined than ever. The quattro version will even switch from using conventional hubs and driveshafts to using electric motors for the back wheels.
With the new A4, Audi will also reinvent the A5 sedan. The model has been very successful, mainly because of its its good looks that make us feel sad to see it go.
According to Automobilemag, the new A5 is coming in 2015 was a 2015 model year for the States. It's currently being developed under the Au494 code name and will probably use the 9T designation as a coupe and 9F as a cabrio. The platform will not be the MQB, but one called the MLBevo, adapted from the current range of Audi models. The regular coupe will shed as much as 220 lbs (100 kg) and there will be an Ultra pack for even more hardcore dieting.
We've been tricked with promises of lighter platforms only to find out the engines are actually much smaller. Our gut feeling tells us that Audi could switch from using the 1.8 TFSI in the base model to some sort of 1.4 turbo engine, either the 160 PS unit used by the Beetle or the 180 PS unit used by the A1 or Polo GTI.
There will be a multitude of engines available, of course, but the most interesting new unit for will be a 470 PS twin-turbo unit for the RS model. This can only mean the next RS5 will have one of those 4.0-liter unit under its bonnet, the same one used by models like the S6, S7, RS6 and so on, and so forth.
Needless to say, more power, more torque and a lighter chassis means the RS5 will push into the territory currently occupied by supercars.
