At the Capital Markets Day 2018 conference in Balocco, Alfa Romeo made the rounds by confirming the return of two nameplates that weigh a lot in the consciousness of the classic car enthusiast. These are the GTV and 8C, with the first promising 600-plus horsepower and the second 800-plus horsepower.
According to the presentation from July 1st, Alfa Romeo showcased a design sketch of the GTV with fixed-head coupe styling and the proportions of a two-door Giulia Quadrifoglio. But according to Car Magazine’s sources, “a spider convertible” is coming “some 18 months later.” Considering the coupe is expected on dealer lots in 2021, the GTC with the soft-top roof should go on sale sometime around 2022.

“The GTV will roll off the regular production line”
according to the automotive publication, meaning that Alfa Romeo could manufacture the newcomer at the Cassino plant in Frosinone, Italy alongside the Giulia and Stelvio. A front-engined 2+2 grand tourer, the GTV is expected to boast an internal combustion engine V6, an electric motor located between the V6 and transmission, as well as 50 kilometers (30 miles) of electric range in EV mode.

Car Magazine suggests the V6 will develop 460 horsepower. Adding the electric motor to the tally equals 530 horsepower, and the 600-plus horsepower promised by Alfa Romeo at the Capital Markets Day should be available in “brief bursts” of acceleration.

The Italian automaker makes a case for 50/50 weight distribution, which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering that the Giorgio platform used in the Giulia and Stelvio also underpins the GTV. “Lower-powered, cheaper GTV models will be available too,” expected to feature a four-cylinder engine and rear- instead of all-wheel drive.

On an ending note, we still don’t understand how Car Magazine came up with those 430 horsepower for the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, which develops 510 horsepower in the Giulia Quadrifoglio. Even if hybridized, don’t forget that switching one of the turbochargers to an e-charger would translate to even more suck-squeeze-bang-blow than the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Then again, let’s wait and see if Alfa Romeo can keep up with all the newities presented at the beginning of June 2018 in Balocco. Fingers crossed the Italian automaker will make ends meet, more so when you bear in mind that Sergio Marchionne would love to see Alfa Romeo compete as equals with the likes of BMW.
