Over the last few years, the hot hatch segment has gone crazy, with its top fighters offering a level of power that allows them to offer sports car-rivaling performance. Now it seems that the segment will be touched by the German Power War, with Mercedes announcing its intention to top the 340 hp Audi RS3 with its upcoming A25 AMG.
AMG boss Ola Kallenius told autocar that the four-wheel drive hot version of the upcoming A-Class, which will showcase its muscles at the Paris Auto Show in September, will receive a seriously modified version of the company’s current M271/M274 petrol unit.
Mercedes’ performance division has turned to its High Performance Engine (HPE) wing (the one responsible for its F1 engines) in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, for the development of the powerplant. The unit, which comes with the same 7mm wall thickness and 90mm bore center space that Mercedes HPE has created for the turbocharged 1.6-liter Formula One engine that was never born due to a regulation change.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder will use a twin-scroll turbo layout and piezo-guided direct injection and has to be more powerful than the 320 hp 3.0-liter turbocharged straight six that will be found in the upcoming BMW M135i and the 340 hp turbocharged five-cylinder mill in the Audi RS3.
The unit will also be used for other hot models riding on the same platform as the future A-Class: the CLC25 AMG four-door coupe, as well as the CLC Shooting Brake AMG, with both vehicles set to come to the marker in 2013.
