With the new generation of the Megane, Renault has swept the compact segment off its feet wheels by introducing all-wheel steering on the Megane GT warm hatch. However, when it comes to the Megane RS in the piece of footage below, the rear-axle steering is a mere illusion that follows an extreme accident.
This hot hatch might be two generations old, the engineering geniuses working for the Renaultsport division have ensured the car delivers astounding handling characteristics. Alas, certain hot hatch drivers tend to put this asset to wrong use, engaging in street racing adventures.
Case in point with the Megane RS in the video below, whose driver put on quite a show while being chased by another car, the one being used as the camera vehicle.
Despite the narrow roads and the traffic present in this Spanish setup, the Renault guy pushes his car harder and harder, in an attempt to lose the tail. The inevitable eventually happens, with the desperate man ending up sliding his way into a turn. This led to the driver crashing and flipping the Megane.
We're dealing with one of those savage accidents where the driver had to thank the French automaker for its safety dedication. While the car was obviously totaled, there are no reports of its occupant(s) being harmed in the process.
The hot hatch ended up in terrible shape after the crash, with the car being dismantled in a mechanically-gruesome fashion. One of the consequences was that the rear axle separated itself from the rest of the vehicle, which is how we ended up with images such as the one above. And yes, we know non-independent steering axle humor won't save this poor Renault Megane RS.
Here's to hoping the spectacular accident we have here serves as a reminder that racing should be confined to the track.
