The American tuner's latest creation will be officially unveiled tomorrow at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. With the addition of Callaway's third generation supercharger system, the all-new model's 6.2-liter LT1 V8 mill packs 620 horsepower and a whopping 600 lb-ft (813 Nm) of tire shredding torque.
From 1977 to date, the engineers at Callaway have produced high performance, specialist versions of Chevrolet vehicles, such as the supercharged Corvettes, Camaros, and SportTrucks. Germany-based Callaway Competition GmbH builds and campaigns the Callaway Corvette Z06.R as a participant in the FIA GT3 European Championship.
What's under the hood of the latest Callaway product is actually quite visible: the supercharger extends through the hood itself, providing additional heat transfer capability for more power. The system uses an Eaton 2300cc TVS four-lobe high helix rotor pack, selected for its thermal efficiency and service-proven reliability.
The intake manifold's runner cross-section and length were tuned for a broad torque band and excellent peak horsepower, while a new triple-element intercooler configuration provides significantly lower inlet charge air temperatures than possible with single and dual element designs.
Callaway is so proud of its all-new supercharging system that certain utility and design aspects are patent pending with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Durability testing and validation, as well as emissions compliance testing are scheduled to conclude in May.
If the SC610 Corvette manages a 0 to 60 mph (0 to 96 km/h) time of just 3.4 seconds with "only" 610 horsepower and 556 lb-ft (753 Nm) of torque on tap, the new model will most certainly offer a bit more of everything. According to the producer, fuel economy is practically unchanged from the stock C7 as active fuel management and modulated supercharger valving sense operating conditions and respond accordingly.
This $22,995 conversion will also get you a low restriction exhaust system, embroidered floor mats, redesigned door sill panels, Callaway badging for the interior and exterior, a build plaque on the supercharger and an authenticity documentation package, along with a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty.
Optional extras include a 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain service contract, Callaway wheel and tire packages and yet to be developed suspension, brakes, body and interior equipment.
