The first retail production 2015 Chevrolet Corvette in Z06 guise crossed the block for a cool $1 million, the lucky winning bidder being none other than NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. The enormous sum of money will go to the renovation of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, in order to provide a more comfortable and soothing setting for patients to receive chemotherapy treatments.
Hendrick himself suffered and fully recovered from chronic myelogenous leukemia thanks to aggressive experimental treatments. He's also a huge collector of General Motors muscle cars, with an appetite for everything wearing the Corvette badge. Last year, the NASCAR team owner cashed out a cumulated $2 million for the first production 2014 Corvette Coupe and Convertible.
“When it comes to corporate citizenship and philanthropy, General Motors and its employees set the example,” said Gerold Bepler, president of the Karmanos Cancer Institute. “Their generosity goes a long way toward improving the lives of cancer patients and supporting cancer research. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to GM, the GM Foundation, Chevrolet and Barrett-Jackson for their ongoing commitment to help end this disease.”
The auction took place at Barrett-Jackson's Palm Beach sale on Sunday and it also included the first retail production 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 (auctioned for $500,000), a Smokey and the Bandit Special Edition 1977 Trans Am ($44,000), a Packard 1207 V12 ($300,000) and the Need For Speed Ford Mustang ($300,000).
We're looking forward to the next Barrett-Jackson auction, where Chevrolet will most probably be auctioning the VIN No. 1 2015 Corvette Z06 Convertible. The American car manufacturer will officially unveil this model in a few days time, at the New York International Auto Show.
