Previously available exclusively as a factory option, the MSO Defined Carbon Fiber Active Rear Spoiler is now available in the United States as a retrofit. Owners of the McLaren 720S can specify it for the princely sum of $9,717.
Fret not, however, because the British automaker throws in a two-year warranty to sweeten the deal. “As pioneers of carbon fiber use in the automotive industry dating back to 1981, carbon fiber is a core part of our DNA and has been found in every road car we’ve produced since 1994,” said Tony Joseph.

The president of McLaren in North America also makes a case for other areas where carbon fiber is used, and the 720S sure comes with plenty from the get-go. Both McLaren and the McLaren Special Operations can get crazy with the composite material as long as your account balance can take the blow, giving the car more visual drama and more go-faster credentials.

Turning our attention back to the hydraulically-operated spoiler, the $9,717 option is designed to act as an airbrake as well. Three operational positions can be chosen by the driver, starting with High Speed Braking (100 percent deployment in less than 0.5 seconds). The other two are called DRS (30 percent deployment) and Driver Downforce (70 to 80 percent deployment).

The MSO Defined Carbon Fiber Active Rear Spoiler can be matched to other packages such as the Exterior Carbon Fiber Pack 1, 2, and 3, helping customers show off their love for the composite material. Available for both the fixed-head coupe and the 720S Spider, we’re expecting the owners to flock to U.S. retailers to get the upgrade as soon as possible.

If you were wondering how much is the 720S in the United States, retail pricing starts at $284,745 for the 2019 model year. The open-top body style is more like $315,000 in this part of the world, considerably more than the MSRP of the preceding 650S Spider.
