The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance had a one big surprise for McLaren fans attending this week: the British carmaker announced the arrival of a brand new model, a roadster meant to deliver "open-top driving perfection."
The car, who does not yet have a name, was announced on Friday (August 16) by McLaren's CEO Mike Flewitt. It should launch in 2020 as part of the Ultimate Series, a range that currently comprises the P1 (sold out and no longer in production), Senna and Speedtail (still available for purchase, including as a GTR version for the Senna).

There are no in-depth details yet on the car, but the carmaker did reveal some info to go with the darkened teaser that came our way.

First, like all other McLarens, this too will be made extensively in carbon fiber. The difference is the new model is expected to be "the lightest car ever produced by McLaren Automotive," and low-profile dihedral doors will allow access for the driver and passenger.

At the car's heart will sit the twin-turbocharged V8 engine currently used in the Senna, but as a modified variant of undisclosed power.

There will be only 399 units of the new car made. to sell for an undisclosed price. McLaren said the model will start higher than the Senna (£750,000) but lower than the price charged for the Speedtail (£2.1 million). The first orders car already be placed, provided you're at Pebble Beach this weekend.

"At McLaren Automotive we are consistently pushing the boundaries to deliver the purest and most engaging driving experience whether for the road or track," said in a statement the company's CEO, Mike Flewitt.

"Our two current ultimate series cars, the Senna and Speedtail, offer unique and distinct driving experiences. Now this new addition to the Ultimate Series, an open-cockpit roadster, will take road-focused driving pleasure to new levels."
