With 620 ps and exactly the same number when it comes to torque levels, the McLaren 620R has officially become the most powerful car in the carmaker's Sports Series. And it should, as it is a direct descendant of the track-only 570S GT4.
This particular race car has been responsible over the past two years for the most race wins and podiums in the McLaren stables, running in championships on four continents. That’s why it was the ideal car to turn into a street version.
The McLaren 620R will be built in very limited numbers (as McLarens usually are), in this case 350 units. Each will be priced in the UK from £250,000 including taxes, but that’s just to get your bearings, as the huge number of personalization options will likely increase that by far more.
Under the hood of the car sits the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that powers the 570S, only this time freed of restrictions. With the harness off, the car can sprint to 62 mph from a standstill in 2.9 seconds, reaches 124 mph in 8.1 seconds, and then keeps on going until the speedometer reads 322 kph (200 mph).
These performance levels are made possible by the use of pretty much the same body as in the race car. The single-piece carbon chassis is wrapped in a body that boasts the same adjustable aerodynamic elements as on the GT4, thus generating 185kg of downforce at 250 kph (155 mph).
The visual differences between the two cars are limited to the front bumper, splitter, hood, and low-exit stainless steel exhausts. The 620R will be offered in three exterior colors, all with GT4 race livery as standard.
“The McLaren 570S GT4 is a first-class GT race car that having won races in every championship it has competed in since its first appearance in 2017 is attracting an increasing number of customer racing teams,” said in a statement Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive.
“Now, in response to repeated customer requests, we have homologated that class-leading package for the road in the new McLaren 620R, a limited-edition, 620PS superlight coupé that is the perfect choice for an enthusiast wanting an authentic motorsport driving sensation – and performance to match – on both track and road.”
