After announcing that they are ending production of the much-loved RX-8, they have decided to celebrate the event with a limited run of 1000 special edition Spirit R cars exclusively for the Japanese market. This has been such a big hit and they got so many orders that they decided to make an additional 1000 units. Unfortunately the car will not be available for purchase in any other markets aside from Japan - Shame!
The special edition was such a big hit primarily due to the car’s long-lasting appeal and rotary engine, but also the special touches added to set it apart from lesser models. It gets larger brakes with red calipers, special wheels, new headlights and foglights, exclusive SPIRIT R badge and special Recaro Sports Seats with red stitching to name a few.
It is a shame to see the RX-8 dying off along with its rotary engine, without a clear promise of it being reborn. Hopefully, Mazda will keep developing its rotary engine technology to power the RX-8 successor.
