As everything is evolving towards a greener future, it’s only natural to see that numerous automakers are trying their best to bring forth new and improved engines with a better fuel economy. This is the case of Mazda, the company having big plans when it comes to its new generation of engines.
It seems that they are preparing a new line called Skyactiv 2 that will makes its debut sometime around 2020. Their goal is to improve internal combustion, aiming to obtain a compression ratio of 18:1, therefore achieving 30 percent better fuel economy.

According to Mitsuo Hitomi, executive officer in charge of powertrain development, this will only be achieved “through lean burning.” The Skyactiv 2 will use a homogeneous charge compression ignition called HCCI that allows for more complete fuel combustion as well as lower nitrogen oxide emissions.

If this got you all excited, let us tell you that Hitomi has plans to bring Skyactiv 3 further in the future. This time around they hope to achieve well-to-wheel carbon dioxide emissions on a par with electric vehicles.

We have to admit it, Mazda is quite determined to show the world that it can bring better engines with better performance. For a small company, we are more than impressed with what they aim to do.
