We think auto design is a little bit like fashion, in that old is new and new is old. Just like girls look at retro fashion and get inspired, us guys might look at a Ferrari 330 GT by Vignale and say "I want a coupe with a shooting brake boot".
It's been attempted before with cars like the Z3 Coupe, but didn't actually catch on. However, the auto industry is much more receptive to trying out new things right now and technology has evolved to a point where designers can put their imaginary concepts into production.

So any carmaker with a coupe or a roadster is ideally placed to put a boot on it. Subaru just did a cross shooting brake concept for Tokyo last week and now we have a rendering of what Mazda's legendary MX-5. Theophilus Chin created it after watching a Jalopnik interview from the LA Auto Show. Unfortunately, that same interview reveals Mazda's designer thinks it's not viable. Time to boo until they give us what we want!

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
