Would you ditch a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Porsche 911 or a Chevrolet Corvette to buy a Mazda MX-5? Stupid question, right? Well, Mazda Canada thinks it can make us change our minds with a different kind of drag race.
The scenario is quite simple. A pack of fast convertibles, including the models mentioned above, lineup for a quarter-mile run. The plot thickens as the Mazda MX-5 shows up and gains an even stronger eyebrow-raising effect as the battle starts with the drivers putting their roofs up.
Obviously, the goal is to start pushing the gas pedal right after the soft top is set. And guess who’s ready first? Yup, the little Japanese roadster who needs only 12 seconds to save its driver from the pouring rain firetruck hose. The next one to get it going is the Porsche 911 in 17.1 second, a gap that’s enough for the Mazda to win this awkward race.
While this is one of the cheesiest ads we’ve seen so far, we must confess that it’s pretty cool. And now you know not to laugh at a Mazda MX-5 at the red light. Especially if it’s about to rain...
