While Mazda’s engineers are busy working on the next-generation MX-5, the company’s designers have played with the colors on the current model, giving us the MX-5 25th Anniversary edition in New York. We are, of course, kidding, since the special edition also brings certain technical goodies, but our humor was only inspired by Mazda’s rather strange manner of approaching this.
Here’s what we mean by that - these are Mazda’s words: “While components such as pistons, connecting rods and flywheel are already preferably lightweight with low inertia and their original tolerance is set extremely fine, even within these acute tolerances Mazda engineers hand-selected the lightest, best balanced premium parts for inclusion in the engine. The result is an engine that revs even more freely, delivering an extraordinary response, precision acceleration and a deeply satisfying engine note.”

Moving past that, the 25th Anniversary Edition comes with the 2.0-liter engine, delivering 165 hp when paired with a manual or 156 hp when working with an automatic. Another reason to go for the manual would be that this comes with a set of special Bilstein dampers. This MX-5 rides on 17-inch wheels shod in Bridgestone Potenza RE05A 205/45R17-84W tires.

As for the aforementioned hue play, the sports car, which is offered in a retractable hardtop form, comes dressed in Soul Red. Well, at least most of it, since the A-pillars, rood and door mirrors use Black.

Inside the Mazda MX-5 25th Anniversary, we find goodies such as aluminum pedals, a special White leather finish, as well as bespoke trimming.

Mazda said only 100 units of the car are set to go on sale in the US, with the price set to be announced at a later date.
