Prepare to pour one out for the Mazda CX-9, a three-row sport utility vehicle that rolled out back in 2006 for the 2007 model year. The Japanese marque has recently confirmed the CX-9 is going the way of the dodo after 2023 with no replacement in sight because the new CX-90 targets the very same family-oriented customers.
Codenamed TB, the first generation came out during a period when Mazda was – excuse my frankness – subservient to Ford. That's why the original rides on the American company's CD3 platform, a vehicle architecture shared with the Edge, Fusion, and MKZ.

Originally powered by a 3.5-liter V6, the CX-9 then leveled up to a 3.7-liter engine for the 2008 model year. The CX-9 was redesigned from the ground up in 2015 for 2016. Codenamed TC, the second and final generation of the CX-9 uses the front-wheel-drive platform introduced by the CX-5 compact crossover.

Offered exclusively with four-cylinder turbo muscle, the CX-9 doesn't sell in large numbers. Mazda recently published Q2 2023 results, from which we learn that 17,359 units were sold in the first two quarters of the year. For reference, the CX-5 totaled 81,804 copies.

It's also worth noting that CX-5 and CX-9 production totaled 353,926 and 59,264 units last year. Given these numbers, are you surprised by this announcement?

Those who prefer the front-biased CX-9 over the rear-biased CX-90 can get one for $38,750 – excluding destination charge – compared to $39,595 for the larger and more luxurious newcomer. Five trim levels are presently available to configure: the Touring, Touring Plus, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and Signature.

All feature Mazda's i-Activ AWD system and 2.5 liters of turbocharged muscle. It should be mentioned that power and torque depend on the gasoline's octane rating. Good for both 87 and 93, the four-cylinder mill develops 227 to 250 horsepower and 310 to 320 pound-feet (make that 420 to 434 Nm) of twist.

Touring means three-row seating with second-row captain's chairs for a grand total of six, a center pass through, black or sand leather upholstery, a power moonroof, a wireless phone charger, and LEDs for the fog lights. Touring Plus switches to three seats for the second row, thus bringing the total to seven, ventilated front seats, a power driver's seat with memory function, gloss black for the front grille, 20-inch alloys in black metallic, aluminum roof rails, and a frameless mirror.

Carbon Edition isn't merely a visual package. It sweetens the deal with a 7.0-inch gauge display, a heated steering wheel, paddle shifts, a windshield wiper de-icer system, Rear Smart City Brake Support, and Adaptive Front Lighting. The Grand Touring is very nice by mid-size crossover standards, yet the Signature is the most inviting of CX-9s due to quilted and piped Nappa leather in either Deep Chestnut or Parchment.
