Once in a while, Porsche does a car that pushes the boundaries of what we think supercars really are. Last time, they made the Carrera GT, a model with underwhelming styling and overwhelming handling that only the best drivers could handle.
Sticking with the mid-engined theme, the Germans have decided to give supercars what owners have been asking for decades - fuel economy.

The 918 Spyder is a hybrid monster, powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine and two electric motors. The first one delivers 107 hp, and sends its power to the front wheels, while the second one, which produces 121 hp is included in the gearbox assembly and motivates the rear axle. The system allows the driver to play with an overall output of over 770 hp according to Porsche last statement. However, rumors would have us believe they pushed it to 800.

Certainly, the 918 still sounds like a supercar, and this video filmed at the Nurburgring by fastsportscardriver has plenty to get excited about, throttle blips, overruns and screeches from the tires pushed to the max.

The supercar has already reportedly set a lap time of 7:22 and is capable of doing 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 3 seconds. The Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari F12berlinetta area all just as fast if not faster, but they won’t get you 3.0 liters per 100 km (78.4 mpg).
