While our initial knee-jerk reaction to the Leon Cupra R was negative, the car has grown on us after checking it out at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. It's way better than anything the tuners have ever done!
At the end of the day, that's what the R feels like: a tuning project. But one thing's for sure. Nothing SEAT has ever built before looked this good.
What have they done? Well, starting at the front, we see that the trim for the grille and air intakes has been finished in gloss black, like you see on some Audi RS models. There's also a copper finish for the badges, mirrors and a few other places. At the bottom of the bumper, we see the most expensive piece, which is a carbon fiber air splitter.
Fender flares have also been added to make the Cupra look wider. They include sexy inserts for the front and rear bumpers and are matched by sporty side skirts and copper-colored wheels.
Around the back of the car, new round exhaust tips stick out like a sore thumb and are flanked by a carbon diffuser. The top of the trunk sports a new wing, but it's a relatively modest one, especially when compared to what the Civic Type R boasts.
Unfortunately, the interior still isn't that snazzy. It's just like the Cupra facelift, with all that fake carbon-leather. They have updated the gauges with a white background and wrapped the wheel in Alcantara, but it's still as dark as a cave in there.
As we've already established, the Cupra R is powered by a 310 HP version of the familiar 2.0 TSI engine. However, if you opt for the DSG instead of the 6-speed manual, that figure drops back down to 300. Production is going to be strictly limited to 799 examples.
