If the Audi Elaine Concept's look brings back some memories from earlier this year, then you shouldn't check your eyesight with a professional.
The model is actually a rehashed version of the e-tron Sportback Concept, which was revealed at the Auto Shanghai auto show earlier this year.
We don't know why Audi decided to change its name from something that sounds a tad Sci-Fi to that of a character from Seinfeld, but the concept's identity isn't the only alteration.
Thanks to the newly developed Audi AI range of technologies, the concept is now fully autonomous of the Level 4 variety. Using a new generation processor with more computing power and “refined sensors with even greater range and precision,” Elaine offers autonomous highway driving at speed s from 60 to 130 km/h (37.3 to 80.8 mph).
It can change lanes automatically and can even park itself automatically in a multistory parking garage after the driver has left it in a so-called handover zone. If the parking lot includes a car wash, gas station or charging posts, Elaine can drive automatically to any of the desired services.
Speaking of gas stations, the concept car doesn't actually need them, since we are still talking about a revamped Audi e-tron Sportback. Just like its nearly identical predecessor, Elaine has one electric motor on the front axle and two on the rear, powering all four wheels.
In total, the concept benefits from 435 PS, which can transform to 503 PS when the so-called “boost mode” is activated. It doesn't sound as cool as “Ludicrous mode,” but it'll do.
The li-ion battery provides an energy content of 95 kWh, which translates into a range of more than 500 kilometers (310.7 miles) in the NEDC cycle. It can be charged either via a wired fast charging function at 140 kW or wirelessly with the Audi Wireless Charging System.
As many of you know, Elaine will actually go into production as the e-tron Sportback starting in 2019 and will be manufactured at Audi's plant in Belgium. There is no word on pricing just yet, but there will definitely be at least two versions.
