It seems the new best way to launch a car is a special edition. It gets the customers over those initial jitters and ensures all the early models to hit the road look great. The Discovery Sport SUV is being launched in Japan on June 1st, and to celebrate, the model called 7 Plus is being offered from 6,490,000 yen.
As we've come to expect, the only engine available in Japan is a gasoline unit fitted with an automatic gearbox. More specifically, we are dealing with a DOHC 2.0-liter direct-injected turbo making 240 PS, a 9-speed auto and standard AWD. The entire combination weighs under 1.8 tons, will reach 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds while being able to deal with the rough stuff.

The Discovery Sport 7 Plus will be limited to just 100 units sold exclusively in Japan. Half of them will be painted in Santorini Black and the other 50 will come in Collis Gray. As the name suggests, the crossovers will be sold exclusively with a 5+2 seat configuration.

The special edition's trim is based on the Sport HSE, but we a few extra goodies. On the backs of the driver and front passenger's seats, 8-inch screens have been installed as part of an infotainment system that the kids can enjoy. You also have standard leather upholstery, which can be ordered in either Cirrus or Almond, this decision also affecting some of the dashboard trim. In both cases, Land Rover installs an ebony headliner.

On the outside, we see that the front grille and fender vents have been painted gloss black, as have the 19-inch 5-double-spoke wheel. The 7 Plus features convenience features, such as Adaptive Xenon Headlights and a powered tailgate. For safety, the Driver Assist Plus Pack is available and consists of automatic emergency braking, lane-departure-warning, and automatic high beam assist.

It will be interesting to see how the Discovery Sport will do in Japan, a country where the locals run the show. The Outlander and all those minivans with AWD are going to give it a hard time

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
