Without the vertical LED headlights or the trick see-through A-pillar, the GT4 Stinger concept unveiled in Detroit earlier this week looks like a shrunken American 80s coupe. In fact, we're pretty sure the designers of the car were from California and looked at Camaros and Trans Ams when they made this thing.
However, there might be enough "Kia" left in there for them to be able to follow these new design lines all the way to the assembly line. Speaking to Autoexpress, Tom Kearns, who is the company's design chief for North America said the GT Stinger is a "total concept but when we do these cars we have in the back of our minds that if we decide to make it, we don’t have to change it too much."
Kia designs most of its cars in Korea and sometimes Europe and later creates American-style grilles to better suit market conditions. However, if ever Kia decides to put the GT4 into production, which we doubt, Kearns says the vertical LEDs and see-through A-pillars will have to go.
I's a shame that the only things making this car different could be removed. Kearns himself say the translucent pillars were a design necessity: “Pillars are getting bigger and bigger by requirement – it’s a big problem, so we looked for a solution.”
Autoexpress even goes as far as to say the GT4 would be a good rival for the Toyota GT 86 and the Mazda MX-5, costing under £30,000. 2016 is the year this British magazine suggests the GT4 will be ready to roll into dealer's lots.
