Hyundai Motor America is recalling the 2022 to 2023 model year Genesis G80, G90, GV70, and GV80 for a low-pressure fuel pump assembly issue. As it happens, the impeller may deform, leading to mechanical resistance that could result in the shutdown of the fuel pump. According to the South Korean automaker, suspect impellers don't meet durability and material specifications.
Documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal no fewer than six part numbers for the affected fuel pump modules, with said pumps intended for six- and four-cylinder mills. The supplier is Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd. of Yeongin-myeon in South Korea, a subsidiary of the AISAN Group.

Internally referred to as campaign 022G, this recall comprises 12,763 units of the GV70, a further 14,414 units of the GV80, plus 2,899 and 1,364 examples of the G80 and G90. Production dates range between November 4, 2021 and September 17, 2022. All four come from Hyundai's Ulsan plant in South Korea, whereas the GV70 is also produced in the United States of America at HMMA.

In addition to the GV70 and its electrified sibling, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama is also tasked with producing the Hyundai Tucson, Santa Fe, and Santa Cruz. Prior to filing the recall documentation with the federal agency, Hyundai Motor America confirmed 463 unique incidents related to the aforementioned problem. Said reports were received in the period between July 2022 and February 2024. Thankfully for Hyundai and owners alike, no crashes or fires have been reported.

The supplier changed the raw material used for impeller production in September 2022. Obviously enough, dealers are required to replace the original fuel pumps with brand-new assemblies featuring impellers made after September 2022. Dealers will be notified electronically no later than June 18, the day owners will be notified by first-class mail.

Codenamed JK1, the GV70 is available in the United States with either a 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 or a twin-turbo V6 displacing 3.5 liters. Over in South Korea, prospective customers are further presented with a 2.2-liter turbo diesel I4. Pompously described by its maker as being a "luxury performance SUV,"  the GV70 starts at $45,700.

Leveling up to the zero-emission model sees the MSRP balloon to $66,450 sans destination charge. That bundle of cash buys you 429 horsepower, 516 pound-feet (700 Nm) of torque, and up to 236 miles (380 kilometers) of EPA-estimated driving range. Pretty good numbers, but alas, not good enough to make Tesla's Model Y break out in a cold sweat.

The G80 sedan also comes in all-electric guise, and once again, Genesis used the very same platform as the internal combustion model for this fellow rather than a dedicated EV platform. At press time, prices kick off at $54,400 and $74,375, respectively. For the time being, the GV80 is the Genesis brand's largest sport utility vehicle. It starts at $57,700.

Last but certainly not least, G90 is the very best that Genesis offers at the moment of reporting. The company's largest and most luxurious sedan may not compete directly against the 7er and S-Class, but its punchy V6, high level of standard kit, and $89,200 starting price make it quite tempting.
