Hyundai Motor America has recalled 15,645 examples of the 2024 model year Genesis GV70 for a transmission harness that may short circuit. Said vehicles were produced at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery, a plant where the South Korean automaker also assembles the Hyundai Tucson, Santa Fe, and Santa Cruz.
Manufactured in South Korea as well, the GV70 uses an eight-speed automatic from the A8 family of transmissions. Rather than Hyundai Transys, the supplier of the suspect harness is Montgomery-based Kyungshin Lear. There are two versions of the GV70-specific control wiring assembly, namely part numbers 91400-IY070 and 91410-IY070.

Hyundai Motor America became aware of the recall condition on February 8, when a GV70 experienced a rollaway at a Hyundai-Genesis dealership. The American division was able to duplicate the rollaway in one freshly assembled vehicle at the factory. Moisture and corrosion in the harness connector led to an inadvertent shift into neutral.

Come February 29, the manufacturer determined that the connector blanking pins meant for empty connector cavities have been incorrectly installed since the start of production. A review of US market field data confirmed no other incidents related to the described condition. Unfortunately, the sole incident resulted in a minor crash and an injury.

Further investigations revealed that the supplier's incorrect blanking pin installation was caused by incorrect work instructions and insufficient air leak testing. Said instructions and testing were corrected on February 23. Dealers nationwide will be instructed to inspect the control harness connection on or about May 14. If anything seems off, dealers are required to repair or replace the control harness and internal wiring of the automatic transmission.

May 14 is also when owners will be notified by first-class mail. Subject vehicles were produced in the period between May 10, 2023 and February 25, 2024. Slotted between the all-electric GV60 and the Electrified GV70, the internal combustion-powered GV70 is the most affordable SUV in the Genesis brand's lineup at $45,150 sans destination charge.

A compact luxury crossover based on a rear-biased platform, the GV70 comes with all-wheel drive as standard. The base powerplant is a 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder. Customers are further presented with a 3.5-liter V6 of the twin-turbo variety, with pricing for this engine kicking off at $57,750 for MY24.

375 versus 300 horsepower may not seem like a big deal, but when it comes to peak torque, the sixer does make a whole lot of sense. As opposed to 311 pound-feet (422 Nm) at 1,650 rpm, the larger mill develops 391 pound-feet (530 Nm) at 1,300 rpm.

The Hyundai Motor Group may have overtaken Stellantis in terms of sales in the United States, but Genesis accounted for only 69,175 sales of the 1,652,821 vehicles sold last year by Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis in this part of the world. Battery-electric vehicles from the Genesis brand accounted for 6,403 units, of which the locally produced Electrified GV70 accounted for only 1,674 units.
