After automakers such as Toyota, Nissan, FCA US and Ford announced expansions of their Takata-related recalls, the peeps from Honda followed with their share of bad news. By adding approximately 350,000 vehicles to prior airbag inflator recalls, Honda and Acura automobiles affected by the Takata Corp. mess-up account for 6.28 million units.
The biggest consumer recall in US history further affects the Japanese company’s North American operations. If anything, nearly two million airbag inflators have been replaced by Honda since 2013 according to Mr. Bruce T. Smith, senior vice president of Parts, Service, Technical, Export & Auto Operations at American Honda Motor Co.
Despite the 350,000-strong addition, the company states that four suppliers (Autoliv, Daicel, TRW and Takata for some reason) are currently manufacturing replacement inflators. Honda also informs that it “averaged more than 50,000 repairs per week” in recent weeks. What nameplates are affected?
Honda expanded an existing airbag inflator recall (NHTSA No. 14V-700) to include 350,000 Civic vehicles from the 2005 model year and Accord vehicles from the 2006 - 2007 model years. The 6.28 million tally affects the following models: 2001 - 2007 Honda Accord, 2001 - 2005 Honda Civic, 2002 - 2006 Honda CR-V, 2003 - 2011 Honda Element, 2002 - 2004 Honda Odyssey, 2003 - 2008 Honda Pilot, 2006 Honda Ridgeline, 2003 - 2006 Acura MDX, 2002 - 2003 Acura TL, 2003 Acura CL, and 2005 the Acura RL.
Owners that are affected by the recall campaign are offered by Honda and Acura dealers alternative transportation at no cost. Any concerned owner is recommended to check their car status now and again after June 15. Further info about the recalled vehicles is available at www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (800) 999-1009 for Honda owners or 382-2238 for Acura owners.
