Never before have the notions of “HEMI” and “diesel” worked together, but now a... loony engine builder has decided to convert one of Chrysler’s iconic V8s to run on diesel. That’s right, we’re talking about a 426 supercharged HEMI that burns oil.
The 426 HEMI has been building muscle car and racing history for over five decades now and yet, to the best of our knowledge, nobody has ever attempted something like this before.
In a move that obviously offends both HEMI and diesel fans, builder Curtis Halvorson at Extreme Engine Development (Canada) put this project together. It all started with a Brad Anderson Entreprises (BAE) Top Fuel dragster aluminum block.
Curtis installed diesel pistons, as well as custom billet-aluminium cylinder heads that hold Bosch common-rail diesel injectors. In case you’re wondering about the blower, this is a 2.5-liter unit, but that’s all we know.
The man isn’t quite a stranger to Chevy diesels either, as he’s the one behind the fastest Duramax diesel in the world, which was installed in a 341 mph (212 km/h) machine.
Speaking of figures...
Well, there aren’t any numbers, since the dyno they strapped this Diesel Top Fuel dragster to couldn’t keep up with the thing. Its builder estimates around 2,500 hp and as for the torque, he wouldn’t even mention this.
Still, since the ECU map doesn’t limit the smoke, as this is a racing development, the thing could easily cover an entire drag strip in thick, black, burnt diesel aroma. In fact, the footage below shows a dyno run for the offendo-dragster, as we’ve decided to call it and you’ll be able to see... just how peaceful Canadians are.
PS: In case anybody thinks about a production model, forget the Hellcat, this could be the Black Panther.
Forget gasoline or alcohol, this HEMI is here to offend everybody
