Times are a-changing' and, with them, so is the market for e-bikes. These past few years have seen an unprecedented boom in sales of motor-assisted two-wheelers, and we're now at the stage of the democratization of these machines.
That's good news for the average Jane or Joe, who might have wished to make the switch to e-bikes but, until recently, couldn't because of prohibitive pricing or too narrow an array of options available. Put simply, e-bikes are getting more diversified, cheaper, more accessible, and more affordable.
GoCycle is all-in on this democratization. The premium bike maker, founded two decades ago by former McLaren designer Richard Thorpe and boasting of producing one of the lightest, most tech-packed, and innovative e-bikes in the world, is going big. "Bigger" is a much better term in this context: GoCycle is announcing a more diverse lineup for 2024.
We're still a couple of months until the ball drops on 2024, but it's never too early to get excited about things to come. This could be one of them, if you're into urban mobility on two wheels, on a machine you can easily haul up and down the stairs, fold neatly to fit in the trunk of your car, and rely on, come rain or shine.
GoCycle's G4 lineup is getting several new additions, including a very surprising cargo version.
Family Cargo will drop in 2024 as a "complete lifestyle upgrade for parents, grandparents, kids, pet lovers and stuff haulers." Details are being kept under wraps for now, but we do know this: GoCycle Family Cargo will share the GoCycle DNA with its predecessors – and the distinctive GoCycle look.
"We’re bringing Gocycle’s legendary class-leading, lightweight, seamless design, complete app/e-drive system integration and portability to the cargo bike market," Thorpe says in a statement.
If you know anything of GoCycle, you know already why these e-bikes are so famous: the design and the combination of high tech, powerful front-hub motor, carbon fiber components, MotoGT-inspired tires, and a sleek, clean profile make them instantly recognizable. In a very crowded market, GoCycle was able to create a bike you can tell is a GoCycle the second you lay eyes on it, even from a distance.
All these will still be apparent in the GoCycle Family Cargo, though we still don't know in what way. For the time being, we have the teaser video below and the photos in the gallery to venture a guess – or two.
The biggest surprise in the announcement isn't the imminent arrival of Family Cargo, but the revelation that the G4 lineup is getting even more additions.
Thorpe mentions "additional new models across diverse market segments," including non-folding and non-electric bikes. That's a surprising – but not unwelcome – move for a company that built a reputation for its foldable electric bikes. It's worth keeping an eye out for, for sure.
