Eight million cars. That is the impressive figure that the BMW plant in Regensburg, Germany, has just hit. The eight millionth example was a BMW iX1. The all-new X2 will soon enter production there.
The star of the plant's new milestone was the BMW iX1 xDrive 30, finished in the Space Silver metallic. The electric X1 is powered by two electric motors, with one, mounted at the front, driving the front wheels while the other one, which is mounted on the rear axle, to engage the rear wheels.

Together, the two motors generate 308 horsepower (313 PS) and 364 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque. The crossover specced like that needs 5.6 seconds to reach 100 kph (62 mph) from zero, while the top speed is electronically limited at 180 kph (112 mph).

A lithium-ion battery pack with a usable capacity 64.7 kWh stores enough energy for 440 kilometers (273 miles), according to the WLTP testing procedure. Back in July, the center announced another production milestone: they had just built the 1,000,000th BMW X1.

A new BMW leaves the Regensburg plant every 57 seconds. There are approximately 1,000 cars per day that currently roll out the assembly line in Regensburg, and the numbers are set to grow soon. The list includes not only the iX1 EV, but also the combustion engine-powered X1s and the X2, which are exported to markets all around the world. But the latter will be replaced by the 2024 X2, scheduled to enter production this upcoming November, with the deliveries set to kick off in the first quarter of 2024.

The first-ever electric version of the crossover will also be manufactured there. The iX2 xDrive30 sports the same powertrain as the iX1, which means it is powered by two electric motors of 308 horsepower (313 PS) and 364 lb-ft (494 Nm), which grant it the same acceleration time: 5.6 seconds from 0 to 100 kph (0-62 mph).

BMW has been making serious investments to put the plant at the forefront of the electric transition. “Preparations are in full swing,” Olaf Mollhoff, Head of Production Control, explains.

The Regensburg Plant will be accommodating a night shift starting November, when the production center will switch to a three-shift operation in order to keep up with the demand for electric BMWs. According to Davide Vitolo, Head of Personnel, the plant is already running additional shifts on selected Saturdays.

By the end of the year, the BMW Group will invest over 350 million euros (over $368 million) in the vehicle production in Regensburg. The move will create approximately 500 permanent jobs. There are already around 9,000 employees working there.

The Regensburg plant started production back in 1986. Back then, the plant only rolled out 200 cars per day, a number that has been gradually increasing.
