French adventurer, Xavier Chevrin, apparently loves challenges with a green twist, after having ridden an electric scooter from France to Kazakhstan in 2008, and two years later he took the Venturi-powered Citroen Berlingo EV from Shanghai to Paris (covering no fewer than 13,400Km or 8,326miles).
He has proved that EVs are a viable (and cheap) alternative to globe-trekking, with the China to France trip costing him around €160 ($200). However, he is no off on a new adventure, a 4,800Km- (3,000mile-) long trip from the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, to South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg. Apparently, after starting the trip, he has been stopped numerous times by the police, but not because he did anything wrong, but because they are all curious as to how this ultra-silent and alien vehicle works. Even if he did something wrong, he couldn’t really outrun them with the car’s top speed of 110km/h (68mph).

He will attempt to complete his journey by stopping every 130 to 320 km (80 to 200 miles), and kindly ask the locals he meets along the way to let him charge his electric Berlingo. After the successful completion of the trip, to further prove the viability of EVs in all conditions, Venturi will prepare him a new car for a future Arctic expedition. We salute the effort and we wish him the best of luck in the deep and often dangerous wilderness of Africa.
