Ford has announced a recall of certain Fiestas, built between November 3rd 2009 and September 21st 2012, in order to fix a programming glitch with the passenger side curtain airbags. The recall affects a considerable number of cars - 262,000, of which 154,604 are located in the US.
Apparently, the passenger side curtain airbags may not deploy in the event of some crashes, when there is nobody seated on the front passenger seat. Keep in mind that the curtain airbag basically connects the A-pilar to the C-pilar, offering head protection to all of the car’s occupants.
If the airbags were to not deploy in the event of a side impact, when there was nobody in the passenger’s seat, yet there were passengers in the back, the risk of injury is substantial. However, the bug can be easily fixed with a software reprogramming, which will be done for free at an authorized Ford dealer.
