At first, they said they would stay away from electrification and especially electric cars in any way they can, for as long as they can. Apparently, they can't do it anymore. The concept car that previews the first-ever Lamborghini EV should be unveiled next week.
Back in May 2021, Lamborghini revealed plans to develop their first electric car, scheduled to enter production sometime in 2028. It seemed they had plenty of time, and there is still a long way until 2028. But Lamborghini is already working on an electric crossover, which should be ready in five years' time. It should reportedly find inspiration in the Estoque, the concept car that the Italian carmaker presented in March 2008 at the Paris Motor Show.

But that concept car never made it to production, as Lamborghini announced the project got canceled in March 2009. Thus the four-door kept its one-off status, with CEO Stefan Winkelmann eventually claiming that it was never meant to become a production model anyway.

According to Autocar, Lamborghini insiders confirmed massive interest in the model back then. But the cost of development versus projected sales convinced the Volkswagen Group’s head honchos to give up on it. They eventually re-steered funds towards the development of an SUV, and that is how the Urus hit the market in 2018, following its unveiling in 2017.

The upcoming Lambo EV will not go the sedan way, though, sitting higher instead, to make room for the floor-mounted battery pack.

The first electric Lamborghini will be a four-seat crossover. The concept car that previews the production model will be presented in just a few days. It should come in the shape of a high-riding super grand tourer, and probably, it will look "like a spaceship," considering what Lamborghini design boss Mitt Borkert said in a conversation with Autocar.

It will be "the first prototype of our fourth series production car," Lamborghini says. In terms of mechanics, the car might get a platform donation from the Volkswagen Group, with the PPE being in pole position, as well as components that it might also share with Bentley and Porsche.

Lamborghini is also working on an electric successor to the Urus SUV, another step in building an entirely electrified lineup of sports cars. The Revuelto PHEV has already replaced the Aventador and has entered production at the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory. Lamborghini played a winning card with the plug-in hybrid. The model is sold out until 2026.

The hybrid successor to the Huracan will see the light of day towards the end of next year. By the end of 2024, all three Lambs will also be plug-in hybrids.

Before that happens, we are to see the concept car that previews the first-ever Lamborghini EV at the Monterey Car Week that begins on August 16.
