Europe's Best-Selling Car Goes Under the Knife, It's a Duct Tape Fiesta (Pun Intended)

The second-generation Peugeot 208 put the larger Volkswagen Golf in its place last year, as it became Europe's best-selling car. Now, the French company wants to repeat that success, and they're prepping a mid-cycle refresh for the popular supermini, which was recently caught resting in a parking lot by our spies.
Seen in the e-208 configuration, which is the battery-electric variant of the range, it had a lot of duct tape all around, including on the wheels, joining the usual trippy vinyl stickers. However, we already know what to expect, and that is a similar design to the 2008, aka the crossover version, which the models powered by fossil fuels will also replicate.

So, what's new beneath the fake skin? New daytime running lights, for one, joined by the fresh headlamps, taillamps, and new bumpers. Don't look for a drastic redesign because the lion brand would rather keep things simple and provocative. We also expect some minor revisions inside, with emphasis on the central screen, which is expected to be smoother, and maybe on the digital dials that could be updated. Elsewhere, it could get new upholstery and trim and will remain the same quirky subcompact hatchback.

Last fall, Peugeot improved the power and range of the e-208. The model is 15% punchier, enjoying 156 ps (154 hp/115 kW), and the total driving range went up by 10.5% to 400 km (249 miles) due to the slightly larger battery pack that has a gross capacity of 51 kWh. It can be charged in less than 25 minutes from 20 to 80% at a 100 kW connection, and it comes with a standard 7.4 kW onboard charger and an optional 11 kW one. Therefore, we do not expect anything new in this chapter, especially since the same setup is found on the refreshed e-2008.

As for the regular versions of the facelifted Peugeot 208, those that are part of the ICE squad, they will live on for the car's mid-cycle refresh. Details surrounding the output and torque are unknown; we cannot tell you whether they have improved fuel consumption and performance. Still, we will presumably find out the juicy details in the coming weeks, when the French automaker is expected to pull the wraps off it.

It is possible that interested parties will have to wait until later this year to take delivery of the facelifted 208, as the first units should start arriving at dealers on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean before the end of 2023. We will end this story by reminding you that Peugeot's 208 has managed to make a name for itself in the automotive industry, while the rivaling Ford Fiesta was dropped for good. It makes you wonder why the Blue Oval couldn't keep the iconic moniker alive, doesn't it?
