You can easily make a case for the fourth-generation Camaro being the least desirable version of this nameplate, historically. It was designed during an era when GM went in a more “GT” direction with the Camaro, rather than focusing on making something truly sporty and engaging.
Also, the fact that it was discontinued due to poor sales (and not an organic end-of-life cycle) speaks volumes as to how underwhelming of a product this was.

To be fair though, the mid 1990s to early 2000s were dark times as far as the U.S. car industry was concerned. There really weren’t too many vehicles you could purchase that would have brought a genuine smile to your face. Maybe the Viper, or the Vette to some extent, but that’s it.

Luckily, exceptions can be found, but only when you dig deep, which is basically how we stumbled onto this limited edition 2002 Chevy Camaro GMMG Dick Harrell Phase 5 car, one of just 30 units built in honor of professional drag racer Dick Harrell. Usually, these types of cars tend to feature custom graphics, maybe a new body kit, and that’s it. This, however, is properly tuned and dare I say, worthy of being called a muscle car.

Starting with the exterior, each car comes with a fiberglass widebody kit, a custom cowl hood with ‘454 ci’ graphics, removable roof panels, Berger and GMMG badging, and a custom three-piece rear spoiler with a “Mr. Chevrolet” decal. This Camaro is said to be one of just two Dick Harrell Edition cars painted Sunset Orange Metallic.

Meanwhile, the 18” Fiske wheels are wearing Michelin Pilot Sport rubber and red-painted Corvette Z06 calipers, while the double-adjustable shocks and 1.5” Eibach lowering springs provide you with an improved ride and stance.

Moving on to the interior, that’s where you’ll find white leather upholstery on the seats and door panels, custom embroidery, a six-point roll cage with a removable rear bar, a Hurst short-throw shifter with a white knob, custom carpeted floor mats, air conditioning, a Monsoon CD stereo, power windows, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with custom instrumentation (the tachometer features a Dick Harrell emblem).

There’s also a Berger Supercar Dick Harrell Edition plaque in the center stack, identifying this as car #4 of 30.

As for the power unit, the seller claims this to be one of three similar vehicles equipped with a Phase 5 engine upgrade, featuring a 454 ci LS6 V8 (with 428 miles on the clock) rocking an underdrive pulley and belt system, high-flow mass airflow housing, tubular headers, and a ported throttle body.

This results in 630 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, with everything going to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

When new, this exact Camaro cost its owner no fewer than $119,511 – this included the Phase 5 performance package, roll cage, plus all the other custom bits. Adjusted for inflation, it would be the equivalent of $206,000 in today’s money, which is kind of insane for a fourth-gen Camaro, but then again, this is a truly rare car.

Now, the fact that somebody paid $155,000 at auction recently should come as little surprise. I was going to say “no surprise” but let’s face it, only a collector with a very particular taste in cars could ever fully appreciate this Camaro. The rest of us would probably just look at it as being seriously overpriced.
