Hybrid supercars are no longer a thing of the future. Just think about the LaFerrari, the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder and you’ll know what we mean. Some of you might hate the idea, but the Corvette, America’s prized sportscar, could go the hybrid way in the future as well.
GM president Mark Reuss said it’s a “very attractive idea”, but it’s not likely for the Corvette to become a hybrid too soon, as the new C7 platform is not suitable for an electric motor and a battery pack, as Corvette chief engineer Tagde Jeuchter pointed out earlier this year.

However, the guys over at Quanta managed to modify the C6’s platform to host such technology, and the result is quite impressive. We’re talking about an all-mean Corvette C6 Z06 that’s been fitted with a couple of 134 HP axial flux electric motors that are integrated into the car’s rear differential. The total output is now at 770 HP and no less than 1,500 lb-ft of torque. This should enable the sportscar to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and run the quarter mile in 11.3 seconds, Quanta adds.

The upgrade could be launched as an aftermarket kit, but it all depends on whether or not there’s enough demand to put it into production. There’s no word on pricing, but we need to ask: Would you drive a hybrid Corvette?
