Nissan Confirms Hybrid Tech for Next GT-R

Rumors about the next-gen Nissan GT-R using hybrid propulsion have been floating around for quite a while, but now the man in charge of Nissan engineering has confirmed this.

Andy Palmer, Head of Nissan Engineering, Sales and Marketing has told autocar that the next GT-R will use a hybrid powertrain. Palmer talks about an approach that sounds like racing tech to us, since he mentions the torque benefits brought by electric power.

“There is an inevitability about electrification of all cars in the future, and there is the very real prospect of enhancements coming from this and ending up on a sports car like the Nissan GT-R,” Palmer told the aforementioned source.

“The electric systems can fill in the gaps in the torque curve and offer genuine performance gains, as well as lowering emissions. It’s win-win, and I’d expect to see some form of hybridisation on the next generation of car,” he explained.

However, Plamer hasn’t mentioned anything about the weight drawback brought by such systems. The current R35 GT-R is already far from being a lightweight animal, so they’ll have quite some work to do with the added weight of the hybrid systems.

However, Nissan claims that the GT-R’s stunning performance is based on the supercar’s optimization for its weight to tire contact patch ratio.

The next Nissan GT-R is said to arrive sometime in 2015, but this info should be taken with a grain of salt.
