It’s been suggested that the Japanese yen, once Mazda’s biggest problem, is now helping them, since exports are becoming cheaper. However, no Japanese-made product will ever be cheap enough for China, which is why the company is switching to local production.
Up until now, the CX-5 compact crossover was being imported into China, but starting this June, it will be assembled locally by the Chang’am-Mazda joint venture. The first Chinese-made CX-5 will enjoy its debut at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show and will reportedly be about 15% cheaper.

The crossover will be available with two petrol versions, a 2.0-liter and a bigger 2.5-liter, 4x4 drive being an optional extra that most buyers will probably avoid in order to get it the CX-5 as cheaply as possible. No word on he 2.2-liter diesel being available yet.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
